Our location is the gateway or launch point (pun intended) to NASA and nature. Our waterways, the Indian River Lagoon and Mosquito Lagoon are designated an estuary of national significance and an outstanding Florida water-way. It is one of the most diverse and productive estuaries in North America. Fish within the refuge are very important to the ecology of the area and recreation.

There are more than 140 species of freshwater and saltwater fish are known to use refuge impoundments, estuaries, and freshwater wetlands. These waterways are part of both Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge and Canaveral National Seashore. Combined they cover approximately 200,000 acres and provide a wide variety of habitats: barrier island, coastal dunes, saltwater marshes, open lagoon, freshwater impoundments, scrub, pine flatwoods, beach, dune, and hardwood hammocks that provide habitat for more than 1,500 species of plants and animals and 15 federally listed species. These habitats support one of the highest numbers of endangered and threatened species found within the National Wildlife Refuge system such as manatees, Gopher Tortoises. Over 350 species of birds such as birds of prey, shore birds, waterfowl, migratory birds, and wading birds. Other mammals include Armadillos, Bobcats, Otters and White tail deer and of course reptiles like alligators, turtles, snakes and lizards.
